Sonja Howard - Creature Artist

Sonja Howard grew up in the Australian rainforest, where real monsters roam. From a young age, her imagination was set alight by these weird and wonderful creatures. She soon began weaving stories and making fantasy creatures of her own, which she sold at markets and later exhibited in local galleries. Sonja’s family were volunteer wildlife carers, rehabilitating injured marsupials and reptiles, so her love of animals started young. She later went on to work after school at the local vet clinic.

These days, Sonja works in the New Zealand film industry at Wētā Workshop, bringing stories to life on stage and screen. She has worked on projects like Rings of Power, Apple TV's Time Bandits, Alien: Earth, and Predator Badlands.

 

In addition to her work in the film industry, Sonja works as an independent creature artist and an author. Her artworks have landed all over the world in exhibitions, tourist attractions, and private collections including the Royal Australian Mint, North American Bigfoot Center, and Wētā Workshop Unleashed. 

 

Sonja is represented by literary agent Elana Roth Parker of the Laura Dail Literary Agency. It is Sonja’s goal to write books where traditionally underrepresented readers can feel seen and validated.
